Can we get the old startup banner back?

On my RaspBerry Pi, on startup, we get the green screen, cog logo etc. Is there any way to get back the simple banner like RISC OS 3.7 had? i.e. go back to “this”: ? |

Hello, A while ago I asked the same sort of thing, and “*unplug BootFX” was suggested: https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/11/topics/8950 It worked at the time, but I don’t know if it will still work with the new version/SD card image of RISC OS that has come out since then. I’m actually still using the old version. Patrick |

Thanks Patrick, that worked perfectly. Exactly what I was after. Cheers Garry |

Yep, unplugging BootFX still works. The old-style banner actually artificially slows down the boot slightly – I made a quick and dirty module called Nosplash that gets rid of it entirely. Put it in !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk. |

I too had this requirement, my motivation for returning to the old method was that I preferred the minimalistic approach Acorn had taken versus a full screen image. I also tried unplugging BootFX, but it was then that I realised why the full screen splash is being used versus the old start-up screen; it hides the effect of moving network initialisation into the start-up sequence. On previous versions of RISC OS, including Select we had a boot sequence that was not blocked by network requests and IMHO requiring the new splash screen. Looking at the positive side of things, we now know that networking is being overhauled and hopefully we’ll see a return to a non-blocking boot sequence and an even faster start-up time. :-) (Doh! – I missed Garry’s entry above, he’s achieved what he wanted!) |
