RISCOS INSTALL BEAGLEBOARD XM

The CR at the end of the line is a carriage return not to be entered as part of the command. In other words it means press the Enter key on your keyboard.

So the entry is

InetSetup$Driver$USB EtherUSB:ej0:EtherUSB:0.06:EtherUSB

then press enter on the keyboard to start a new line then save the file.

Still not having success!!! the leds are active but netsurf give that error and interface inst configurable.

At risk of stating the obvious, did you restart the beagleboard? There’s a couple of threads on this site titled ‘EtherUSB’ that might help.

On the interface window, have you put a tick in the box as shown below? (The configure button will remain greyed out until you do this!)

I have reinstalled the system and redo every passage and now i’m able to serf the internet ; ) THANK YOU. There was something messed up! I think because i have setup the network before isntalling etherusb.

I just wanted to say thank you very, very much! I’ve got my Beagleboard xM last friday, and I hat exactly the same problems like Matteo (each of them!) Reading this thread carefully was a very great help to me. One thing: As I didn’t found a suitable SD-card image anywhere, I’ve manipulated it myself: Obviously the trouble-makers are the files “MLO” and “UBOOT.BIN”. So I’ve copied the two files from the SD-card which came with my Beagleboard mX (it was conaining Aengström-Linux) to the new SD-card for RISC OS. (I was so clever to buy another card and not just to delete Aengström…)

Now my system is up and running, except ethernet. Do I really have to buy an USB to ethernet stick, or is a solution for the built-in ethernet expected in the nearer future?

The internal usb-ethernet has been working fine on the BB-xm for some time.

Do you have the etherUSB module installed? There are some postings on this site about etherUSB. Try doing a search for etherUSB, it turns up a lot of posts, although a lot of the more recent ones are about the RaspberryPi, rather than BB.

Depends on your version of RISC OS. In 5.19 the EtherUSB is already in ROM and I guess the current harddisc image includes the necessary support files as well.

The manual way for older versions is:

• Download EtherUSB from http://effarig.co.uk/riscos/
• Put the module in the folder “!Boot .Resources.!System.500.Modules.NetWork”
• Make a Obey file named EtherJ consisting of the following line:
  “Set InetSetUp$Driver$USB EtherUSB:ej0:EtherUSB:0.12:EtherUSB”
• Put the Obey file in folder “!Boot .Resources.Configure.!InetSetup.AutoSense”

After a reboot double-click on “!Boot → Network → Internet → Interfaces”. Tick EtherUSB and configure it to use DHCP.

The onboard device should work.
Press ctrl-F12 and then type h. etherusb (that’s shorthand for “help etherusb”)
If the etherusb is loaded it will give a set of help information.

If you have etherusb module loaded then double-click on the !Boot in the root of your boot image installed from “HardDisc.util” and then configure using the Network icon and following the guide in this URL:
http://www.riscos.org/networking/riscos.html but choose DHCP so you don’t have to set any IP details.

I must confess that I didn’t try ethernet, because my knowledge was not up to date ;-) I hope I will find some time this evening to go on with my Beagleboard.

I also lost a lot of time asking question about how to install risc os, but now i have a complete system running. It’s great this topic is still helpful.

1. Next problems: Thanks to the manual for installing EtherUSB, internet is working. Unfortunally Netsurf 2.9 crashes right after I call any website. I see the website building up, but after loading of the first graphics it crashes. Netsurf tells “Netsurf has detected a serious error and must exit. Please submit a bug report…”. Well, I would, if I could use the browser… In the bug report I find the line “failed to open Netsurf/Choices” and something about the image caches.

2. I also have the RISC OS OPEN USB-stick with the system. It is not the same as the free downloadable HardDisk4, ait does not only offer some wallpapers, but for example also some 21st century screen-resolutions. I think there are other differences under the hood. There Netsurf works.

3. Is there a trick with Zip-Files? On the installation from the internet I had to start !SparkFS first, but it does not seem to unpack the archive permanently. The same is with the USB-Stick from ROOL, but it works as a Zip-file like a normal program. Is that normal? How do I unpack properly?

Regarding your Netsurf crash: Look in Netsurf’s configuration in Images → Image quality. Both, foreground and background, need to be set to “Use OS” as Netsurf’s own render module Tinct isn’t ARMv7 compatible.

Regarding ZIP files: With SparkFS you can use ZIP archive like normal folders (copy to and from it, delete files, start applications). SparkFS does the necessary compression and decompression on the fly. To have a decompressed copy of the files in the archive, just copy the whole lot from the archive’s filer window to any place on your drive you like.

Regarding your Netsurf crash: Try the Netsurf test build http://www.netsurf-browser.org/downloads/development/netsurf.zip . No problems on my Panda board using better modes.

Volker – Holger may have misled you slightly. Although the utility is OK for your start up purposes, you may need more in due course.

The version of SparkFS that is supplied in the ThirdParty directory is a read-only version.

I’ve had a hard time installing RISC OS 5.18 on my BB xM in the last few days, I’ve got small things to sort out before I can use my BB productively (ie I move my main apps there) but still the bulk of it is finished. The lack of CMOS permanent save + french keyboard were a particularly painful experience (soon a thing of the past). I still need to install Andrew Conroy’s AlignEx because the number of working apps amounts to about zero atm.

I noticed several bugs in the InstallHD4 script, someone with the proper admin rights will be able to change them ?

*changedynamicarea -ramfssize 32m CHANGED to *changedynamicarea -ramfssize 64m
(32 Megs is too low to hold all the HardDisc4 contents apparently)

*copy SCSI::0.HardDisc4/util RAM::RamDisc0.$.HD4 ~c CHANGED to *copy SCSI::4.$.HardDisc4/util RAM::RamDisc0.$.HD4 ~c
*dismount :0 CHANGED to *dismount :4
(since the external USB HardDrive has SCSI number 4 by default ?)

I got to test AWViewer with a few example files and I got to admit I was particularly blown away with the rendering speed !
We’ll see if AlignEx alllows Artworks and Techwriter to work without upgrading (I pray for this – I don’t need the new features).

I see a lot of developers getting really really involved, it’s very positive for the RISC OS scene ! (small donation made)

I can highly recommend R-Comp’s BeagleBoard Support Scheme which turned the Beagleboard from a bit of a hobby to a direct replacement for my ageing Iyonix. It’s not free, but it is worth every penny (or cent or whatever!).

Not least because it provides both AlignEx and now a special version of AemulorPro, which unleashes a world of legacy (but excellent) software – TableMate and Eureka, for example!

@andym: I have several questions about that support scheme. Can you help me? R-Comp never answered my emails…

-Is that Aemulor PRO version already available or are you talking about a future release? Adrian Lees hasn’t announced anything abour Aemulor being available for the Beagleboard yet, as far as I know. Is it any good for Accorn Archimedes games, like Lemmings, The Dungeon, etc? Or is it only good for productivity programs?

-Is the same scheme available for the Pandaboard ES? Does it include Aemulor PRO? I Currently have one of those Pandaboard ES and I love to run some old Archie games & demos on it with Aemulor, even if I have to define some screenmodes.

Hi Jérôme! Long time no talk! Yeah, the French keyboard seems designed to be as annoying to programmers as possible. There’s something of a lack of QWERTY around here (Pearl, fnac, even Amazon wants ~€30!). Hope Jeremy’s fiddles to the keyboard driver get my one working.

You can’t do much with the clock without a battery (or ntp client), however CMOS can be saved as a file and reloaded at boot. Note that there are two load addresses floating around, one of which is old and wrong. ;-) Look at the stuff in !SDCreate, you ought to pick up the correct address from there.
I’m running 5.19 (month old vintage). Nice, I ought to upgrade to the latest but not had much time.

You know, I’ve got some bits ready to attempt to get !FYEO2 working on the Beagle. Just, you know, ’cos. (^_^)

It was released to the BeagleBoard Support Scheme subscribers yesterday! I have only tested it with a few apps that I was missing, like TableMate, Eureka, and Recycler. But they all work perfectly well (well, Recycler crashes on shutdown, but I’m trying to work out why). I haven’t tried it with any games, as I don’t have any, other than TwinWorld and Zool but they were 32bit anyway. The email does mention Heroes of Might and Magic 2, but I don’t have that to test it either.

Is the same scheme available for the Pandaboard ES?

I believe it is, and it’s called something (daft) like PandaLand. Having just read the ReadMe file with AemulorPro, it does say that it works with the PandaBoard, so I’d imagine it is included with PandaLand. I can’t guarantee that though – I’d phone R-Comp if that is possible. Or maybe someone with a PandaLand subscription will come along and let you know.

I’ve got some bits ready to attempt to get !FYEO2 working on the Beagle.

Well… The GIF and JPEG crashes. My BMP code (straight C) works nicely. ;-) I was going to recompile to see about supporting the extended screen modes to handle the “Bad parameters to get_mode_from_specs” error but…

…woe is me. Damn thing uses “RISC OS Lib” (and is the only thing I have that does). Gah – where is my larger install? RiscPC? Some CD-ROM?

Does anybody have a zip of the latest (beagle-friendly) version of RISCOSLib, save me looking around for mine.

So, for now, status…

FYEO2 (v2.05e or whatever as from my website):

• Loads on Beagle.
• Does not recognise “current” mode (long-standing bug); config to not use current mode as a workaround.
• Displays BMP images without problem.
• Displays PPM images without problem.
• Will display GIFs with alignment exceptions turned off.
• Does not display JPEGs (with align-except on, crashes; with it off, displays sort-of-gibberish).

Once I get a working RISC OS Lib, I’ll see about a recompile, but I may need a newer compiler as mine is of early Castle vintage. Let’s see, we’re almost there, “sort of works” is better than a Flat NO, right? (^_^)
