User icons?

I notice some people have different icons, rather than the blue power-button style. Best wishes, Rick. |

Why is this post in the Tests forum? Is it some sort of test? |

Create a Gravatar account. The forum attempts to look up your email address there automatically to see if you have an avatar defined. No, of course this isn’t documented anywhere, that would just be silly… |

Steve – the other forums are for RISC OS matters, of which this…isn’t. Martin – thank you. |

OK, now we all can get one. |

Many thanks. Just got one (will it appear on the older posts/this one/both) |
Chris Hall (132) 3554 posts |
No it doesn’t, but does appear on my ROOL profile. Puzzled. |

Now they have appeared! |

Testing…testing…1…2…3… (gee, that was original!) |
Steve Revill (20) 1361 posts |
No problem. I just didn’t want your question to be ignored because everyone assumed you were doing some cunning test! :) |
Rick Murray (539) 13840 posts |
Meh… A geek in a foreign land. Heck, sometimes I think “ignored” is the default setting. ;-) Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I don’t really have the sort of personality that works well “in real life”. At least if I make a dick of myself on-line I can stick a smiley after it. In real life, there’s just this long awkward silence… I’m used to that too. |

To follow on, I am guessing the number in brackets after the name is some sort of user ID? The odd thing is, this ID does not correlate with the system user IDs. I’m #539, or /users/439. Steve is #20 or /users/4. Wiggle your mouse pointer over the names and look where the links go. Strange, huh? Oh, and just to smirk at lame programming, I tried /users/1234 and was greeted with “Application error” and “Rails”. Application error? Oh, wait, you mean after the clever messing around to turn a URL into a parameter, nobody bothered to sanity-check said parameter? <sigh> Ah well… bedtime… yay… best part of the day! ;-)
Best wishes, Rick. |

While we’re on the subject of undocumented stuff, I just noticed that if you go to a thread while logged in there’s a little ‘Watch topic/Set’ box at the top right. I wonder what will happen if I tick it? |
Trevor Johnson (329) 1645 posts |
Well, as this is the Tests forum, presumably you’re going to, er, test it! Maybe your inbox will become flooded, so I hope unticking it works. |
Rick Murray (539) 13840 posts |
Nothing – I have ticked it for posts I’m following, but not noticed anything different… |
Theo Markettos (89) 919 posts |
I did find a use for the ‘watch topic’ feature. If you go to your user profile (click your username on a post), you can see a link for ‘view monitored posts’. On that page there’s an RSS link which gives you an RSS feed of the posts you’re interested in. This even works for other people… here’s the RSS feed for posts Rick’s following , for example. |
