Embedding pictures with Google Docs

The embedding used to work, didn’t it? It is pretty quirky as an end-user too, scaling the image to fit the display, and when you choose 100% it scrolls in its own way ignoring the browser’s scrolling functions. How typically Google. The better solution – use DropBox or one of the usual image sharing services (but I think DropBox won’t time out). However, periodically Google change the server which breaks all of the images up to that point. This is why I saw your image before, but now it isn’t there. The current URLs may be present for a year, or gone tomorrow. Google Docs isn’t really suitable for stuff to be embedded. FWIW, at least for right now: |

It looks like there’s an API to convert a folder to something that can be served on the web, albeit with eccentric URLs. Not exactly suitable for a real website, but should suffice for things like embedded images. More details at http://www.webmonkey.com/2012/11/google-drives-new-site-publishing-takes-on-amazon-dropbox/ I have not tested it (I host my images on my own site), but it looks like DropBox can embed files by replacing the “www” in the URL (is a preview) with “dl” to directly serve up the file [ https://www.dropbox.com/help/201/en ]. Simpler, huh? |

I will eventually sort the site out. The reason I quite like Google Drive (though its abilities are too restrictive currently, but then it couldn’t host web pages a month ago) is that it is so transparent – the ‘site’ appears to be a directory on my disc (well, it is). This means not only is pushing something to the site as easy as copying something locally, I can do so from within an Acorn emulator. Plus all the contents are synced between my various devices. So, pros and cons, and I lack the time to do something better right now, regrettably. I think you’re right that DropBox would work better for images to be embedded elsewhere, and I’ll bear that in mind, ta. |

Good call on using DropBox – that works just fine. |
