Good news – not news to anyone using RISC OS .21 probably! – but the File System Improvements bounty has been successfully completed. This is an important step that paves the way to future improvements. We will be rolling out the ‘step 2’ bounty soon… |

Is this upgrade tied to RO5 or can the modules be loaded in PreDesk? ps – any news on the USB stack update? |

Aha – if the improvements are in 5.21, I should be able to test one of them. I have a Creative Zen Store media player whose block size is 2 kiB, which has made it unusable previously. |

Last time I looked at the CVS a month or so ago all the Filing system improvements were submitted by a Mr Rob Sprowson! Thank you Sprow. |

Remember that the changes are in support in FileCore (and FileSwitch), but that the clients are in general hardwired to whatever they expect – so ADFS assumes 512B sectors on a parallel ATA harddisc for example. If you have a media player with 2kB block size your filing system’s block access functions would need to know about that too.
Ah, but I do act as overspill/review/submit monkey when the ROOL folks are drowning. Me submitting something doesn’t always imply I actually wrote any of it. |

Yes, a lot of the work was done in 5.19 so is present in the 5.20 release. It was the more risky stuff that was held back for 5.21. |

Whatever happened to:
Is such documentation available anywhere? The wiki Filecore section doesn’t seem to describe more than the SWIs. |

We’ve unfortunately had to re-open the File System Improvements because the previous claimant had to down tools for personal reasons. :( Please get in touch with us if you’re interested in finding out more about tackling this key bit of development work. |
