Third party software bounties?

Current bounties are very interesting. Other bounties could be very interesting. For several reasons. 1/ To free some existing software. Today, it’s really not easy to make money from RISC OS software. So perhaps that if some developers tell “give me xxx and I’ll free my software”, we’ll have the opportunity to get more titles. Examples: compression, CD writing, games, etc. 2/ To adapt software. Today, it’s really not easy to make money from RISC OS software. So perhaps that if we give some money to developers they will accept to free (if not) and adapt their titles for ROS 5. Examples: VNC Server, Synergy like client, games (ho ho), etc. 3/ To port some software (or optimize ports). Same reasons… Examples: VSync in ArcEM, headless mode in ArcEM, RPCSpoon port, RISCOS cross compiler (with tools as Zap and StrongEd, RISC OS is REALLY a very good development platform), new Firefox port… 4/ To create new software. Same reasons, but a bit different. I have a new software, and want xxx to complete it. I came with a prototype, get money or not, etc. Crowd funding. Examples: games (huk huk huk), new basic compiler, etc. Could RISC OS Open Ltd. manage these third party bounties? It’s also an opportunity to take part of the money as fees. |

FWIW I had a brief look at this a couple of months ago. Although the HDMI interface isn’t documented in the public OMAP4 TRM, it looks like all the code needed to drive it is in the Linux sources. So either a GPL OMAP4 video driver or a clean room reimplementation could allow us to get the HDMI output working under RISC OS.
That’s pretty easy to implement, but I’m not sure how useful it would be. What uses do you have in mind? |

We’d rather not, to be honest. There are probably better ways to make those things happen than leave the bounty up to (the already rather overloaded) ROOL volunteers! :) |

Do we need a bounty for a bounty manager? :) |

We should certainly have a bounty to cover planning how we’re going to add more bounties… ;) |
