Login requirement

I was surprised to discover that you require an account on this site before you are allowed to make a donation for a bounty – I wonder how many potential donators have been turned away at this stage?

I suspect there are complications surrounding money laundering legislation that require an element of traceability for the donation.

Don’t money laundering legislation have a lower bound below which there’s no need for traceability? Crazy if not – but I suppose for a site accepting donations it’d be an extra complication to have to make such a distinction.

I have only limited knowledge (enough to avoid trouble when chairing the social club) but sometimes you have to think differently.

Well, indeed. But £1 * 10^6 from the same source would be very noticeable, and setting up 10^6 distinct sources would be one hell of a lot of trouble!

However, I also am shooting from the hip here.

I’m fairly sure that there is no requirement for logins.
There are a lot of websites that don’t require logins to place payments.
The usual reason for logins is for tracing customers orders and history.
The banks are reasonably good with money laundering and would pick this kind of behaviour up, these are enforced at the account end with requirements of where you live will depend on which bank account you can open with which bank.
Tracing a user back through a login isn’t really usefull, tracing it via a bank account is far easier and more credible in court as well.
I’d also guess that ROOL isn’t subject to any money laundering regulations…if it was we wouldn’t be discussing theoreticall donations of a million – we would be seeing them, which would be nice! Come on Bill you can donate, put something back ;-)

We do this for a few reasons but the headlines are:

• If something went wrong with the donations process or there was, say, a PayPal dispute, we have an internal audit record to compare against PayPal records.

• If a pot gets expired money is redistributed away to other active pots. Someone might want to know if this happened to their donation and how much went where.
