Pi 3B USB reading with Risc OS 5.24

It’s worth bearing in mind that plugging it into a 3B won’t give you 300mbps as the Ethernet port on the 3B is only 100mbps. You’d fare better on a 3B+ which is Gigabit over USB, so can do in excess of 200mbps (but nowhere near Gigabit!).

You also need a browser other than Netsurf to configure it. Some of the older Vonets firmware worked with Netsurf, but nothing recent. QupZilla does a good job and there’s an add-on front-end for it here.

Otter-browser will also do it, but it’ll be slow on a Pi 3, I’d imagine.

Bob – if AndyM (RISCOSbits) has any in stock, I’d recommend getting the Vonets from him for approx 18ukp – it’s a great price, and supports a RISC OS company (and includes instructions etc).

If you accepting alternatives, there’s also PiFi v3 which gives you a nice RISC OS front end, and turns a Pi into an access point for your RISC OS machine(s). However, the value of this is largely dependant on whether you have a spare Pi. I didn’t mention it previously because you seemed to have settled on (or at least homed-in on) the wifi hat, which is obviously the neatest/tidiest option.

Totally agree and had excellent support from AndyM as I have from many RISCOS developers/companies.

I have a Vonets aka WispyV and also the first Wispy using an OrangePi from RISCOSBits and the instructions you get are clear and very helpful.

Andy, thanks but this Pi 3B is on loan. Will buy the best for the job, Pi4 is enticing but it may be too early (for Risc OS), and the 3B+ the better option. I’m thinking safety with a 3B+ now and Pi4 later, ‘giving’ the 3B+ to my other half to play SNES games ;-)

Fair comment, thanks. I am in contact with Andy regarding his Risc OS Pi options & found him responsive with good advice. I wasn’t aware he sold these & I will explore all options :)

I was, but then thought, with resurrecting the RiscPC, I’d still need RJ45

I was demonstrating the Pi 4 running RISC OS on hotel WiFi at the SW show using the Elesar WiFi Hat with real time clock and the Iris browser (a real time clock is required so that SSL works correctly and a decent browser to handle ‘logging in’ to the hotel system).

And by good fortune, at 09:14 this morning DHL delivered some more stock of the variant of the WiFi HAT with real time clock.
There’s an update of WiFi Manager also waiting in the wings which flags when extra signon steps are needed (eg. with a browser), but as there aren’t any coffee shops open at the moment testing it is proving tricky!

Having hit a wall with accessing my USB stick & cocking up, End result I had to reinstall & chose the RISC OS Direct version (5.27). USB working and some other issues resolved [Thank you all].
