Ok so how do you set a OTG port? |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
Success! The setup I have is not quite how you describe, but achieves the same effect. I did understand the hardware aspect of setting host mode, but those using Raspian were reporting that they could just attach USB items with only 4 wires, I imagine Raspian sets host mode in software but RISC OS has never needed to do this. I was using the micro-USB to female USB A lead supplied by CPC. Clearly it does not act as an OTG cable. Now I can work on refining things. Thanks. ;-) |

Steve would you mind sharing how you’ve got the hardware host mode set up? This is new to me and cant find very much online. A lot of discussion but no ‘DO THIS’ instructions, Many thanks |

A OTG cable has also 4 wire… maybe yours is a OTG cable. Something like this . I have also, works. I need a new metal case for my SchlepPi . P.S.: It looks like Chris Evans use also such a cable. |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
But is has the 4/5 bridge in the plug – that is what has been missing in mine.
I’m still ‘doing this’ and it is but a day or two. I think Raik has the crux – that you need an OTG cable. In my special set-up I just plugged in one of those micro USB adaptors that Raik linked to into the Zero. This had the effect of making the bridge. I will post a picture later. |

OTG mode cables distinguish between host and slave device using the fifth pin. host: connected to Signal ground slave: not connected Since pin 4 is ground linking 4+5 marks that end as host. |

Other question. Why are only 113MB RAM free? Where is the rest? |
Tom Williamson (2844) 26 posts |
Hmm?? ok, thanks both very much for your help I will try a different cable. very odd how my set up works fine with Raspbian??? |

In the past the latest firmware has sometimes been incompatible with the latest RISC OS (no boot). Therefore the latest firmware needs testing before being supplied with RISC OS. I suspect many firmware changes have little if anything to offer RISC OS, so time is probably best used elsewhere. |

Here’s a first view of the Pip0: Edited to reduce size of picture. |

It should also be a micro-A plug which is similar to a micro-B but with a rectangular cross section but Raiks pictures shows his adapter isn’t – the plug has bevelled edges. Are the 2 pi usb ports the same or does the data one have a rectangular cross section which would make it a port designed take either a micro-A or micro-B connector depending in whether you want it to start the connection as host or device when connecting 2 otg devices – A plugs go to the host, B to the device |

Use the Link Better? |

Whoa. The plugs and adaptors are bigger then the board. |

So, Rick, as John Sandgrounder said in his reply to you near the start, the kits had cables, and, following this thread, it would seem that that was a sensible way for CPC Farnell and others to go, particularly as so many people have had problems with the wrong plug/adapter/cable! Nonetheless, I’m surprised that your Farnell euro price was numerically very close to the sterling price – IIRC something like £12.83, though now marked as “out-of-stock”. |

+ RTC – Adaptors + case = Schlepi Zero :) |
Chris Evans (457) 1614 posts |
The two PiZero USB sockets are both standard microUSB. The power socket has no data connections. The data socket can unofficially be used for reverse powering. |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
Which is what I bought, but the micro to A USB adaptor is not OTG, which is only a problem for RISC OS, unfortunately. ;-( |
John Williams (567) 768 posts |
The CPC site advertises it as such, so you should complain and demand what was advertised! |
Colin (478) 2433 posts |
I don’t see a use for an adapter which has a socket for a standard-A plug at one end and a micro-B plug that signals itself as a peripheral at the other so it’s odd that it doesn’t work |
Steve Drain (222) 1620 posts |
Indeed it is, but I have checked whether it makes the bridge – NO – and taken it apart – the plug just has 4 solder points, which is unusual, compared to all the plugs I have taken apart in the past. I will think about what to do with CPC. ;-) Edit I bought two Zeros, so I have opened the other box and tested the USB adaptor – it works as advertised – so I must have had a faulty one. Forget all my warnings, but it has led to more hassle than I wanted. ;-( |

Work in progress… + Chalk Display, Powerbank, … = ZeroTab
Sorry, not the right MDF and sorry only a half hour in the morning… |

As per my experience USB to Ethernet can be difficult. |

I prefer your other design, with a much smaller screen. It has specific case also, so you could add buttons and make a good JXD (crossover between tablet and portable gaming console) alternative… or simply simulate the 3 button the easy way. Anyway, the Schlepi will probably continue to be the best device for me. A Pi Zero version would be more compact, more powerful and will use less power and provide more memory than my Pi A Schlepi. The ultimate portable Iyonix pc :) Will you put a supercapacitor on the new version (to avoid reboots when we close/open the Lapdock)? I don’t know if it’ll drain power or not (IMHO, to be able to use the Schlepi for 7+ hours is more important than the reboot problem). |

I’m very novice at forum posting, so I hope this is in the right place.. Quote?? >> front Steven Drain… It is the same problem with an A+. This is quite nice and has a USB hub too. It works with RO5 out of the box, but you need the micro-to-A USB adaptor cable. This is a lot cheaper and might be OK and work out of the box, but there are similar ones that do not. I had mine direct from China some months back at half that price. ;-) I’m testing things while I wait for Pi 0’s to land. I bought one of These (first link from steven) >> http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LLUEJXW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 My Pi B has RiscOS 5.22 (rc14?) on it so I tried the usb3+rj45 out – needless to say it didn’t work, at least not by-itself… My network is mostly wired, the Pi B plugs straigh in.. all working fine, but it won’t pick up when plugged into the usb3, my keyboard and mouse are on it. Usb end also fine… Any ideas? Thank You – #RJ #uCHOOZE |

Start your quote with ‘bq. ’ (note the space) at the beginning of the first line of the quote and don’t put any blank lines in the quote. End the quote with a blank line. It is likely that the adapter won’t work with a Pi B – it needs too much power. Pi’s without a hub and ethernet port like the A/A+ and pi zero don’t use much power so should power a plugin adapter. |
