Get connected with ROOL

The bonus binaries launched last October have just gained a whole extra utility application, !Connector, originally written by Andreas Zieringer for the Archimedes.
Connector1 is a terminal emulator program which supports the XModem, YModem, ZModem and plain ASCII protocols to transfer files and data with a remote terminal.
While the advent of always connected broadband has consigned dial up modems to the pages of history, there are still numerous gadgets which talk plain text serial data – like a wirelessly connected remote sensor. Perhaps after a little experimentation that could be the basis of your next Raspberry Pi programming challenge?
Connecting serial gadgets to WiFi with an Imp module
The application is in the bonus binaries as it has a few rough edges, in particular anyone wanting to extend it to:
- Use the MimeMap to lookup filetypes
- Add support for > 256 colour ANSI escape sequences
- Translate the help into other languages
are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and improve the source code which is mainly in the C programming language.
Connector makes use of the widely supported RISC OS BlockDrivers which were originally written by Hugo Fiennes of The Serial Port. Hugo is currently CEO of Electric Imp, based in the USA – it’s a small world, get connected.
