Revved up v8 Nut Pi on the starting blocks

Since the release of the new Model 3 Raspberry Pi on this year’s leap day, we’ve been working with the various contributors to the amazing value Nut Pi bundle on an update.

The Model 3 is the first time that RISC OS has run on an ARM architecture 8 processor, and with that change comes a few software incompatibilities – most notably that some instructions that used to be valid have been removed by ARM.

It was also a good opportunity to put newer versions of some of the titles which have come out since the last Nut Pi update back in June 2015. For example, the RISC OS Open Desktop Development Environment is now at DDE26.

We’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to RISC OS since 2006. It is hugely improved from the sorry state it was in back then.

It was ten years ago tomorrow that we incorporated RISC OS Open Ltd. It’s been and eventful decade and I think it’s fair to say we’ve all made a real difference. ROOL has achieved pretty much every major milestone that we originally set out and it’s definitely a more vibrant scene.

Here’s to the next ten years!

JPEG bounty captured, parrot unharmed

Ahoy there! Any land lovers who watch the recent changes to RISC OS will have noticed a recent wave of activity in the area of JPEG, marking the completion of this bounty.

JPEG images are most commonly encountered from digital cameras or similar real life pictures. They achieve very high compression ratios by relying on the design of the human eye (the one without a patch over it) where brightness detail is more important than colour detail.

RISC OS Open are happy to announce that we will be attending this year’s Wakefield Show on Saturday 16th April.
