Ticket #102 (Fixed)Tue Dec 19 19:39:48 UTC 2006
Sources page bunzip2 reference
Reported by: | Martin Avison (27) | Severity: | Normal |
Part: | Web site: Collaboa (bugs and subversion browsing) | Release: | Batch One code release |
Milestone: | Status | Fixed |
Details by Martin Avison (27):
Page content/sources refers to requiring a bunzip2 program to decompress source files, and says it is available in the bzip2 archive from riscos.info.
I have just downloaded file bzip2-1/0/2/2-2/zip but that does not seem to contain any reference to bunzip2!
Is it me, or are the instructions wrong?
Would it not have been easier to use something that is normally easily usable on RISC OS?!

Sorry that you found this confusing. I’ve added the following explanatory text to the Sources page:
“This contains the bzip2
executable file which includes the unzip facility; use “bzip2 -d <filename>
” to decompress the archive to a Tar file which you can then access using command line utilities or front ends like SparkFS. We use BZip2 because it produces just about the smallest possible file sizes of any cross platform archive format available for RISC OS."
I hope this clears things up. While BZip2 isn’t as convenient as (say) a Zip archive can be for RISC OS users owing to applications like SparkFS, it does produce significantly smaller files and is available for a very wide range of other operating systems too.
If you’re happy with the above then please mark this ticket as “fixed”, otherwise I welcome any other suggestions or queries you may have.
