Ticket #105 (Fixed)Mon Jan 08 11:25:20 UTC 2007
pinboard doesn't display icon when text string too wide
Reported by: | Ewen Pring (76) | Severity: | Normal |
Part: | RISC OS: General | Release: | |
Milestone: | Status | Fixed |
Details by Ewen Pring (76):
Not sure if bug applies to just OS 5 (5.12 here) or if it also applies
to OS 4/6.
Open a file named WWWAAAAAA. Press the iconise icon on its window
(assuming it is enabled in !Boot window furniture options). A window
icon never appears on the pinboard like it should, but disappears into
the ether.
It isn’t just not visible, because going to the Pinboard menu, the
‘select all’ option is greyed out, suggesting the Pinboard does not
think it contains anything.
If you were unlucky, the bug could mean losing data you have entered
since the last save to disc, since there doesn’t seem to be any way to
‘de-iconise’ the document available to the user.
My Pinboard options are to iconise to the top left.
I have been told this is a known issue, probably not RO5 specific; the
Pinboard appears to fail to display the icon if the text string used
for the icon text is too wide.
The Netsurf developers ended up hacking a workaround into NetSurf to
mitigate against this. Here’s the diff:

Setting the desktop font horizontal aspect to 90% (not an easy thing
to do!) stops the problem, at least for this particular string.

The Pinboard didn’t center icons correctly to a grid cell that were wider than the grid spacing. Because of this they were being created with very large x-coordinates that were way out of the visible area.
Until this fix makes it upstream; the icon can be forced on screen by using the menu to select all icons on the Pinboard and then tidying. If you don’t want to ruin your current Pinboard layout then after ‘Select all’ and before tidying, drag Adjust across the entire screen to deselect all the visible icons.
