Draw SVG file import/export
Reported by: | Trevor Johnson (329) | Severity: | Enhancement |
Part: | RISC OS: Application | Release: | |
Milestone: | New features for RISC OS 5 | Status | Open |
Details by Trevor Johnson (329):
General
As we all know, there are numerous vector formats available.
Import
This would probably be the more difficult aspect, which could partially explain why maintaining compatibility for DXF import appears to have been abandoned.
DXF
- I know there are some sample
&DEA
files somewhere within CVS which were reported as not working. - I had no luck getting Draw to read them.
- It’s the same with the most basic AutoCAD DXF exports, i.e. saved as release 12 DXF.
SVG
- Obviously, unsupported features would have to be sensibly ignored/reworked.
Export
- This should be easier to implement. Current software (e.g. ArtWorks, Draw2SVG) provides some export capability.
- IMHO native export direct from Draw is desirable, particularly for those wanting to share SVG images.

It looks as if the DXF import hasn’t been touched since 1989. The author, David Elworthy, now works for Google.

Although I guess that anyone even thinking of looking into this will already be familiar with such standards, here’s the Autodesk DXF Reference, for information.

- Summary changed from Draw: file import/export to Draw SVG file import/export
- Release changed from 3rd public site release to Unspecified
The not-very-functional DXF importer was retired from Draw 1.43, with no plans to reintroduce it, so this is really an enhancement about SVG import/export.
