SciCalc anomalies
Reported by: | Bernard Boase (169) | Severity: | Minor |
Part: | RISC OS: Application | Release: | |
Milestone: | Status | Fixed |
Details by Bernard Boase (169):
(1) ref. Martin Hansen’s discussion at http://mathmagical.co.uk/Mathematics/CalcPuz.html in which implied multiplication can be misinterpreted by a calculator. Using SciCalc 0.83:
(1.1) | 6 ÷ 2 () 1 + 2 () = | gives | 1 |
(1.2) | 6 ÷ 2 × () 1 + 2 () = | gives | 9 |
(1.2) is correct. (1.1) fails to recognise implied multiplication and/or fails to give a warning. Older versions (e.g. 0.65 from ROL under 4.39) give both the correct value of 9.
(2) In drafting the updated User Guide description of SciCalc, I wanted to use the area of a circle, but
(2.1) | π × 7 × 7 = | gives | 153.9380401 |
(2.2) | π × 7 x2 = | gives | 153.93804 |
(2.3) | π × 7 xy 2 = | gives | 153.93804 |
To the available accuracy, I think (2.1) is wrong. Older versions (as above) gives all three the same value of 153.93804.
(3) The button for division has ÷ but the display of the calculation has /. Is the difference deliberate? Similarly the button π shows pi in the display.
