Ticket #454 (WontFix)Fri May 11 17:55:59 UTC 2018
The "up arrow" symbol used to indicate "Shift" in menu hotkeys does not appear when in UTF-8
Reported by: | Rick Murray (539) | Severity: | Normal |
Part: | RISC OS: Module | Release: | |
Milestone: | Status | WontFix |
Details by Rick Murray (539):
Assuming Latin1.
Load !Edit and open a blank document. Open the document menu and go to the “Misc” submenu. Down at the bottom of the menu are the entries “Column tab” (Shift-F3) and “Overwrite” (Shift-F1).
Leave the menu open, press F12, then enter:
*Alphabet UTF8
Go back to the Desktop and observe that these menu entries now appear as being F3 and F1 respectively. The “Shift” marker has disappeared.
*Alphabet Latin1 and they return.
Also observed with StrongEd, Zap, etc. It’s a Wimp issue, not the application.

This is correct – there’s a group of 6 special desktop characters which aren’t valid UTF8, hence are rendered as blank.
This is explained under the heading “Desktop font” in the section “Unicode support” on page 98 of the Style Guide, along with what to do.
