To connect to Windows 10, which disables SMB1 protocols if they aren’t used, you may need to go into Control Panel and turn them back on again. This is in the ‘Turn Windows features on and off’ section:
Also make sure that ‘Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP’ is turned on in the WINS tab of the Advanced section of TCP/IP setup for the respective network interface.
Which method is selected is agreed during an initial dialogue with the server so should be entirely automatic. If you need to force use of plain text authentication do one of:
1. Open “regedit.exe” on the Windows machine as described here and change
‘HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters\EnablePlainTextPassword’ from 0 to 1
2. Reboot
1. Open the ‘/etc/smbconf’ file and change “encrypt passwords = yes” to “encrypt passwords = no”
2. Reboot, or restart Samba.
