Q: How do I change the Screen Resolution?
A1: Look for the Display icon in the IconBar at the bottom right of the screen. Click it once with the left mouse button. Now select your desired resolution. See A2 if it is not contained in this menu.
A2: Open !Configure from the PinBoard (Desktop), or by double-clicking on !Boot. Click on the ‘Screen’ icon in the Configuration window. From there select your desired resolution (it defaults to “Native”) and colour depth, then click on Try . You will be given a 10 second delay to confirm your settings, or they will be reset to the previous values. If you want the change to be permanent, click onSet.
Q: How do I set up a screen saver?
A: Open !Configure from the PinBoard (Desktop). (Desktop), or by double-clicking on !Boot. Look for the ‘Screen’ icon in the Configuration window and click on it. From there select your desired screen saver and click onSet (or Try to try it first).
Q: How do I change the desktop wallpaper?
A: Click the middle mouse button on the desktop background to display the Pinboard menu, then click on “Configure”. If you want a texture or a single colour background you can set this right now. If you want some other background image (JPEG) then open the folder that contains that image and drop it into the box next to ‘Custom Image’. You will see your new wallpaper (backdrop) there. Click on Try to try out your new settings, then click on Set if you are happy with them.
Q: How do I change the icon size?
A: Click the middle mouse button on a directory display and move the mouse onto the arrow to the right of ‘Display’ on the menu. This will display a sub-menu, allowing you to select ‘Large icons’ or ‘Small icons’: this will change the setting for your current session only. If you want to make a permanent change, open !Configure and click on the Filer icon in the Configuration window. In the section titled ‘Directory displays’ click on the menu button to the right of ‘Display objects as’ and choose ‘Large icons’ or ‘Small icons’ as desired, then click on Set.
Q: How do I change the window theme?
A: Open !Configure from the PinBoard (Desktop) then click on “Theme” in the Configuration window. Tick the box labelled ‘Load extra theme resources on startup’ (if it isn’t already ticked) and then click on the menu icon to the right of the theme name. This will display a list of themes, which you can preview by moving the mouse pointer to the right of the theme. Click on the theme name to choose it, then click on Set.
Q: How do I change / disable the window textures?
A: To disable the window textures, open !Configure from the PinBoard (Desktop). Search for the ‘Theme’ icon and click it once. Un-tick the option ‘Textured window backgrounds’ and click on Set.
Q: Can I change the mouse cursor? pointer?
A: Not easily, no. Applications can – obviously – do so, but an explanation of how that is done is outside the scope of a beginner’s1 is outside the scope of a beginner’s FAQ.
1 The actual answer is OS_SpriteOp 36, but getting yourself to the point where you can use that information requires you to learn quite a lot about programming for the RISC OS desktop.
